293

In 1948, scientists exploring the Bat Cave in New Mexico discovered that American Indians had lived there for more than three thousand years.  Research revealed that American Indians were the first people to cultivate corn, and popcorn was one of there favorite foods. The scientist’s uncovered 766 corn cobs, 293 popcorn kernels and 6 popped kernels inside Bat Cave.  The kernels discovered in the cave were carbon dated to 2000 BC!

A young entrepreneur named Norville Blackenbocker has decided to use this story as a way to sell his popcorn.  He has just one problem; he needs someone to design a container that will hold exactly 293 popped kernels.  He has heard that students at Lenox Middle School have read about volume and may be able to assist him.

Your job is to design a container for Norville.  The container must have a name or logo on it and it must have a usable lid. Your team must also have a sheet of paper that explains how you decided on the shape and size of the container.  The container should have a volume that will hold as close to 293 popped kernels as possible.  The hard part is that you won’t be given 293 popped kernels.  You only get 10!

You may use paper, scissors, tape, a ruler and markers for your container.
